There are any number of reasons why you might be wondering how to make your Pinterest account private.

Maybe you use a Pinterest business account and want to keep your personal pins hidden from your audience with secret boards. Or maybe you’re looking for information on how to hide your profile and boards from search engines.

Whatever your reason is, you’ll find out how to make a Pinterest account private in this article — and all the features you can use to protect your personal information on the platform!

Step One: Enable Search Engine Privacy on Pinterest

Don’t want your Pinterest profile showing up in search results on Google (and other search engines)? You can go Pinterest incognito by updating your search privacy settings on Pinterest. Here’s how to make an account private on Pinterest (from the web):

Tap the drop-down menu in the top right corner

Select Settings

Select Privacy and Data

Check the box next to “Hide your profile from search engines“

Select Done

Keep in mind, if your Pinterest account wasn’t hidden from search before, it may take several weeks for engines to remove your profile from search results.

Wondering how to make your Pinterest account public to search engines again? Just uncheck the box!

Prevent Your Website Content From Being Pinned

There’s another handy privacy feature that accomplishes the opposite, too.

Worrying about copyright infringement, or just want more control over your social media marketing channels, use the “No Pin” code from Pinterest.

Adding this code to your website protects your website content from the Pin-It web extension.

If you want to allow some items from your website to be pinned, you can block saves of specific images by adding a tag to the image.

You now control both the image and the description being pinned from your site because it typically picks up the alternate text you enter on the image.

Step Two: Use Pinterest Privacy Settings

If you’re interested in locking down some (or all!) of your Pinterest content, Secret Boards are the answer.

Secret Boards on Pinterest are only viewable to you and anyone you invite to the Board.

When you save Pins to a secret Board, they won’t appear on your home feed, in search results, or on your Pinterest page (to anyone but you and your collaborators).

Wondering how to set Boards to secret on your Pinterest profile? It’s incredibly easy!

How to Make a Board Secret on Pinterest

For existing boards, just go to your Pinterest page, hover over the Board you want to make secret, and tap the Edit button (grey pencil icon).

Now scroll down to the bottom of the pop-up window to the Settings section. You’ll see a toggle switch next to “Keep This Board Secret.” Toggling this switch off will make your Board public again.

Once you’ve toggled the switch to On, click Done.

How to Create a Private Board on Pinterest

Creating new private boards is easy, too! Just go to your Pinterest profile, click the + sign and then Create Board.

You’ll be prompted to name your Board, set dates (optional) if you’re using your Board to plan a trip, and decide whether to Keep this board secret.

You can use this step for creating secret Boards for all your personal content, and you can change your decision anytime.

Step 3: Use the Block and Report Feature

Wondering how to stop followers on Pinterest from interacting with your content or seeing your content?

With the ability to block and report users on Pinterest, you can control who is interacting with your Pins.

You can also help the platform clean up by finding and deleting spam accounts on Pinterest!

Pinterest Terms of Service outline what the platform allows. If you see a Pin or a Profile that clearly violates these terms, report it!

If someone is not in violation of Pinterest’s ToS but is still bothering you, block them! There’s no need to open yourself up to content you don’t appreciate. Blocked people won’t receive a notification that they’ve been blocked either, so protect yourself and your content.

Do you use Pinterest Group Boards in your marketing strategy?

While they don’t work the same way they used to, there are still plenty of ways to use Group Boards for your business.

AND there’s a new way to get many of the benefits you used to get from Group Boards. Intrigued yet?

What is a Pinterest Group Board (And How Does it Work?)

Pinterest Group Boards (also known as collaborative Boards) are shared Pinterest boards that multiple Pinterest users Pin to. The Board is owned by one Pinterest user who has given other Pinterest users permission to add Pins.

Here’s how you can tell whether a board is a Pinterest group board or a regular board, with examples from tavernatravels’ Pinterest page:

A regular Pinterest board will list the title and number of Pins on the preview.

A group Pinterest board will show the icons of other Pinners invited to the board. You’ll also see a join button under the description.

If you’ve joined a Group board, you can invite other Pinterest users to it unless the Board owner has indicated otherwise in the rules.

Interestingly, when you follow a Pinner, you only follow their non-Group Boards and the Group Boards they own.

By default, you don’t follow Group Boards they belong to, but you can visit their profile and follow them one by one if you’d like!

Why Use Pinterest Group Boards?

Pinterest Group Boards were created to help Pinners collaborate with people they know. In the past, people used Group Boards to increase the distribution of their Pins, as people following any of the members of your Group Board would be more likely to see your Pins in their feed.

Since that was not the intention of Group Boards, Pinterest has started limiting the distribution of Pins in Group Boards to the members of that Board only – encouraging true collaboration.

Who Benefits From Sharing Boards on Pinterest?

Wondering how you can use collaborative Boards on Pinterest to your advantage? Here are some ideas to get you started!

Trip planning – invite your traveling companions to submit ideas for things to see and places to visit. Comment and “like” ideas that appeal to you.

Party planning – share themes, games, and decor ideas and get feedback.

House hunting – share homes, styles, decor with your real estate agent.

Support group – going through something tough? Enjoy finding and sharing uplifting content? Start a Group Board.

Brainstorming ANYTHING – Share ideas for a work project.

You get the idea (and the differences between group board and private board)!

How to Find Group Boards on Pinterest

There are four easy ways to find collaborative Pinterest boards. Below, you’ll find detailed instructions on each method!

1. Conduct a Pinterest Board Search

A Pinterest Board search is often the first place to start. It’s easy to do, if a little time-consuming. Here’s how:

Type a subject relevant to your Pinterest account into the Pinterest search bar

Refine search results by tapping the Filter button to the left and selecting “Boards”

Look for Boards in the search results. Profile icons don’t appear anymore, so the number of Pins may be a good hint!

2. Check Out Your Competitors’ Pinterest Group Boards

Try looking at other Pinterest profiles in your industry to see which group Boards your competitors are contributing to!

Here’s how to find collaborative Boards on Pinterest that your competitors have joined:

Go to their Pinterest page

Click on “Saved” to see their Boards

Look for multiple profile icons next to the Pinterest Board title

3. Search Facebook Groups for Pinterest Board Owners

You can also check out a number of Facebook groups full of people who are looking for group Board contributors.

You’ll find a number of industries, niches, and topic-specific groups in Facebook search results.

Request to join groups that are most relevant to your Pinterest account topics – these are going to be the best Pinterest group boards for your marketing strategy.

4. Use a Pinterest Group Board Search Engine

An easier way still is to use Pingroupie.com. If I want to look for marketing Boards to join, I type in “Marketing” and scroll through the results. The “Score” (out of 100) is based on things such as repin rate, number of collaborators, follower growth, etc.

I’ll look for a board without too many collaborators, but lots of followers. Remember, you’ll still need to take a look at each to check for quality.

And you’ll still want to check your Tailwind Pin Inspector after joining to make sure your Pins are doing well here!

There are also a number of blog posts with lists of group Boards. Check out some from this Pinterest search.

How to Join a Pinterest Group Board

The most simple way to join group boards is to look for Boards with the “Request to join” button. Those are the ones most open to new members.

Some Group Boards may also have instructions for joining in the Board description.

I know, I know. Pinterest is our escape, our happy place. So when you mention Pinterest and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) together, unless you’re an SEO pro, you’re probably cringing just a bit right now!

No worries, you won’t find any tech speak here, just tips to help you get your content found on Pinterest. In fact, it’s possible that SOMEBODY (me) spent a good many hours reading and re reading the Pinterest Engineering blog in an effort to pull out some gems and distill them down just for you. Intrigued? Good!

Is Pinterest SEO Worth My Time?

Sure is! Since Pinterest is a visual search and discovery engine, it shares a lot more in common with Google and other search engines than it does social media sites like Instagram.

For instance, like Google, Pinterest can be a powerful driver of qualified traffic. In fact, it’s long been the #2 driver of social traffic, and for many Tailwind members, it’s the number one source of website traffic – period.

BUT, If you want people to see your content on Pinterest and you want to generate more traffic from Pinterest to your site, you need to help Pinterest distribute your content to the Pinners who want it.

And while follower engagement IS a factor in the distribution of your content, Pinterest is actively seeking your help to determine where to show your content in search, the home feed, and related (or “More like this”) Pins. That’s where Pinterest SEO comes in – and that’s where there is a lot you can do to improve your content’s SEO.

What is Pinterest SEO?

Since Pinterest is at heart a search and discovery platform, optimizing your Pins, profile, and content for Pinterest is very similar to optimizing for Google. And just like with Google, the uptick in traffic from your hard work may not happen overnight, but it will happen.

Note: We’re attempting to present many of the factors shared publicly on Pinterest’s Engineering blog, but there may be others which are not publicly shared. If you stick with these suggestions and always aim to help Pinterest create a platform full of high-quality, fresh, engaging content, you’ll go far!

Here’s What You’ll Learn:

Pinterest SEO Factor: Keywords

SEO and keywords go together like PB&J, but unlike the iconic sandwich, things can get a little overwhelming here – and fast. Not to worry! Here (not necessarily in order of importance/impact) is where Pinterest looks for your keywords in order to decide if your Pin should appear for a certain search query:

We recommend you review Pin titles before you schedule to make sure they follow Pinterest’s best practices:

7. Similar Words and Phases

This is why we don’t need to worry about using plurals or every possible iteration of a key phrase to cover our Pinterest keyword bases. Pinterest handles it for us. Some examples might include:

email marketing tips – might also appear for “Email marketing ideas”

email subject line – email subject lines

subject lines email – email subject lines

How smart is that?

How to Do Keyword Research on Pinterest

Pinterest keyword research is fairly simple. You can use the auto-complete search feature, or go down a rabbit trail with guided search. First, auto-complete…

Start typing in one of your relevant key words and Pinterest will give you a few suggestions. Write these down.

You can also use the Pinterest Trends tool to research trending topics, and the demographics that are most interested in them!

Pinterest SEO Factor: Interests

Every Pin on Pinterest is mapped to several Interests. There are tens of thousands of Interests organized to 10 levels of specificity (?!) and they’re used to remove unsafe content, provide personalized recommendations, target ads, and as a ranking factor in search results.

What does this mean for YOUR Pinterest SEO? Beyond trying to picture your product or services in the image and employing good use of keywords, there doesn’t seem to be much you can do to influence Interest mapping.

But it is important to know how it works when we get to ranking (soon!).

Are they similar to your Pin and would you be happy to have your Pins search results like this? If so, great! If not, review your keywords in all 9 spots above and see if you can clarify your keywords for Pinterest.

This is what we all want – to get our Pins to the very top of the search query results on Pinterest!
Pinterest Personalized Ranking

While text relatedness, cohesion, and engagement return a great selection of Pins of interest to a search for any given keyword, Pinterest takes it a step (or more) further.

They want to show you what YOU want to see. With that in mind, Pinterest looks at several signals to rank your personal results. Here are a few of them.

Pinterest Personalized “SEO” Considerations:

Are the Interests this Pin is mapped to the same Interests that YOU tend to engage with?

Are people like you apt to be interested in one Pin over another (based on identifiers such as gender, etc.)?

Do you tend to engage with this type of Pin?

Pin type – static, video, carousel, story, etc.

Visual style of the Pin

Country of origin of the Pin

This is the “magic” part of Pinterest SEO. You can (and should) follow best practices for design, consistency, and skillful use of keywords, but in the end, Pinterest is a search AND DISCOVERY network and they’re constantly working to create a better, more personalized experience for all of us.

The more you pay attention to the engagement on your Pins and run tests with different images and keywords, the better you’ll be able to tell which of these “magic” factors helps move the needle in terms of traffic and conversions on your site.

How People Search on Pinterest

Since 97% of searches on Pinterest are unbranded, it’s clear that people are open to discovery and inspiration. Rather than searching terms such as “best running shoes” as one might on Google, a person on Pinterest is more likely to search something such as “beginner running tips.”

With that in mind, you’ll want to expand your keywords beyond your product or service to attract people before they even know they need you.

Pinterest Distribution and Your Website

Pinterest wants to serve up Pins that lead to quality content. Aside from the obvious must haves of useful content, well, written, it also needs to be engaging and inspiring. You should also make sure you verify your site with Pinterest. That allows Pinterest to see that YOU are the owner of the content you share from your site.

Make sure you use Rich Pins on your site to give more context to your Pins.

Pinterest wants to send traffic to quality sites that provide a great user experience. In fact, they won’t even take your money to send ad traffic to pages that are full of pop ups and ads, so it seems likely that sites like that will see their content suffer in search.

Then there’s quantity. Pinterest wants you to Pin consistently, but it also wants you to Pin high quality, fresh content. Try to create new content on your site at least weekly – and make sure there is a Pinnable image on every post! When in doubt, lean towards fewer high quality Pins, rather than spamming your account with low quality or duplicate Pins.

Pinterest SEO Wrap Up

While all search engines keep some secrets, Pinterest has shared with all of us many details about how SEO works and how we can get our Pins ranking higher.

Seven steps to Pinterest SEO success:

Make good use of keywords in 9 important spots.

Understand Interests

Learn the Pinterest ranking factors to get your Pins at the top

Understand personalized search

Did you know that Instagram marketers who use nine or more hashtags per post get more than 2.5x the engagement of those who only use one hashtag?

Without a doubt, hashtags are critical to building followers and engagement and contribute to your entire marketing strategy. However, they can make your feed look unappealing and spammy.

So how do you keep your Instagram feed pretty and clutter-free? EASY! After finding the perfect set of hashtags for your post, learn how to hide hashtags with one of the four simple methods below.

Should You Hide Instagram Hashtags?

There’s no harm in hiding your Instagram hashtags to neaten things up. Whether you put your hashtags in your caption directly or move them to the first comment, your content will still appear in hashtag discover feeds if relevant to the hashtag topic.

So, there is no need for concern as you’re pondering how to lower your hashtags on Instagram. It’s just a matter of choosing the right method for you!

Which one works better, Caption or Comment?

We understand that looks are not everything; sometimes, you want to do what is best for your content. So which one is better? Which one gives you more visibility? Our teammates Alisa Meredith and Melissa Megginson took over YouTube to give you answers. Take a look!

Now that you’ve made up your mind, keep reading, we’ll give you some hashtag hacks on how to make the most out of them!

Hashtag Hack #1: Hide Hashtags on Instagram in the First Comment

The cleanest method to hide hashtags on Instagram is by tucking them into the first comment. Just have your list of hashtags ready to go, and add them as a comment after making your post live.

Does this sound too manual for your liking? Tailwind does the work for you!

When you add hashtags to your Instagram caption in Tailwind, you’ll see a checkbox to hide your hashtags in the first comment. This allows you to move your hashtags from the end of your caption to the first comment on the post.

That’s it! No more cluttered captions, no more remembering to return to a post and add your hashtags. Your post is ready for engagement the moment it goes live!

Hashtag Hack #2: Use the Instagram Dots Method to Hide Hashtags

One of the classic methods of hiding hashtags is Instagram dots.

This is a cuter way of saying adding a series of periods between the end of your caption and your hashtag list so that they’re hidden beneath the “More” button for your followers.

Here’s how to do it:

Type up your caption

After the punctuation at the end of your last sentence, make sure there are no spaces. Then hit return

On the new line, put one period, and then hit return again

Keep repeating until you have plenty of Instagram dots between your caption and your hashtag list

Paste in your hashtags and press publish!

It’s really important to make sure that you don’t include any extra spaces at the end of your sentences or after each Instagram dot. If you do, it will cancel out the line break and ruin the effect!

It used to be necessary to type out your caption with the line breaks on a separate word processing app like Notes. But now Instagram allows you to form line breaks in your caption directly through the Instagram app! Just click the “123” at the bottom left of your phone’s keyboard and tap “return” to jump to a new line.

Hashtag Hack #3: Hiding Instagram Hashtags in the Caption

Looking for tips on how to put your hashtags lower on Instagram captions?

There IS a way to put your hashtags in your caption while keeping your posts and feed looking good, and it works similarly to the Instagram dots method.

Simply format your caption so that it adds line breaks, pushing your valuable hashtags into the “more” section of the caption where they still do their job of increasing reach and engagement, but aren’t easy to see!

Remember, take out any extra spaces lingering after the punctuation at the end of your line breaks. It also includes after emojis in your captions!

As with the dots method, you can type out the caption with the line breaks directly on Instagram now. But just remember that any hidden spaces will cancel the line break.

This Instagram post from @harpermaven is too pretty be covered in hashtags! See how her formatting moves them below view?

Did you know? You can also compose captions with hidden hashtags in Tailwind! Just copy and paste in your caption and formatting, and then use Hashtag Finder to find the best hashtags for your Instagram post.

Here’s a Tailwind hack that makes this incredibly simple and quick:

Use Tailwind’s Instagram Hashtag Lists to Hide Your Hashtags

Tailwind’s Hashtag Lists make hiding hashtags on Instagram captions unbelievably easy.

From Tailwind’s Instagram publisher, create a “Hashtag” list which in this case will actually store ONLY your formatting:

In the Tailwind Instagram Publisher, click on the “#” button

Now click the “+” button. I called mine, “formatting.”

Add line breaks and characters, symbols, or emojis on each line. In this hashtag list, I included a camera emoji, and then double asterisks, each on their own line. This will add a camera emoji to the end of my caption and then insert line breaks with asterisks on them to move my hashtags down and out of view!

The important thing to note is that you need to have SOMETHING on those lines in order to sustain the line break for publishing. You could use a dash, some ellipses, or an emoji, but make sure there is nothing else on that line (no spaces following the characters) or the line breaks will disappear when you post to Instagram, even if it looks fine in the Instagram scheduler.

Now you have a handy template that will save you time every time you schedule a post – AND keep those hashtags out of sight!

Type your caption, add your “hashtag” list plus hashtag recommendations or your premade hashtag list, and post!

Hashtag Hack #4: Add Conversational Hashtags in Your Caption, Hide the Rest

Here’s a method on how to hide Instagram hashtags that make your post look spammy but keep the ones that create fun conversation.

Hashtags have been around so long that sometimes it just makes sense – and can feel a bit playful – to include them in the conversation!

With Tailwind’s Hashtag in first comment feature, only the hashtags at the END of your caption will be moved to the first comment.

So, go ahead and include some in the caption just for fun.

Instagram verified status is on every marketer’s wishlist, but it can be so confusing to figure out how to get that little blue check for yourself! If you’ve been wondering how to get verified on Instagram, search no further. We’ve got the answers you need.

We’ve analyzed, experimented and researched the best ways to get verified on Instagram – and translated them into seven simple steps and a ton of powerhouse tips to get a blue badge on your profile.

In this article, we’re going over common questions like what Instagram verified means, why you want an Instagram verified badge, and how to apply for verification. Plus, we’ve got quick tips to improve your odds.

Ready to get that prestigious blue seal on Instagram yourself? Let’s dive in! ‍

What is a Verified Badge on Instagram?

You’ve seen the little blue checkmark next to some of your favorite IG account names. This blue symbol ( a seal with a check in the center) means that the account is officially verified by Instagram. People, brands, and businesses with the Instagram verified badge are authentic.

The blue badge is given to notable people and brands on Instagram. It’s really important to avoid imposter accounts and copycats!

Fake accounts, copycats and impersonators target well-known and influential accounts on social media. These imposters use their likeness to trick unwary followers. Not cool!

At best, impersonators are annoying. At worst, they negatively affect your brand and image on social media.

That’s why the Instagram verified badge was created. The handy blue badge is a certification of authenticity on Instagram. It shows followers that the person or brand behind the account is real and can be trusted.

What is the Value of a Blue Badge on Instagram?

Let’s be real. The little blue tick is important for verifying real Instagram accounts, but it’s also a status symbol. After all, if you’ve earned a blue badge on Instagram you must be somebody “notable”, right?

That’s why getting Instagram verified is a major milestone for growing accounts. However, if you’re wondering who exactly gets a verified profile on Instagram, the platform leaves the exact requirements a little vague.

Can I Get Verified on Instagram?

The short answer is maybe. It’s easy to figure out though, anyone can apply now! Here’s why:

Instagram introduced a public verified account application in August 2018, to demystify the process and curb the secret black market for blue checks.

The application for Instagram verification is now public. Before the application went live, no one really knew what the criteria was.

Here are the updated requirements from Instagram in 2021. We’ll get into the nitty gritty details, but the basics are that you need to be authentic, unique, complete, and notable.

Never Try to Buy Your Verification Badge

Never trust that friend that tells you he has another “friend” that works for Instagram and can get your badge for only a few dollars. Also, never trust those people sending you DMs saying how easy it is to get your Instagram account verified and asking you to pay them to take care of the process.

Instagram scammers know that people and businesses are feeling exaggerated about the blue check. Also, be aware that some are very effective at looking legitimate. Keep in mind that Instagram will never request or contact you for payment.

In addition, it is very important to always play the game by the rules. Ignoring Instagram’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines will suspend or delete your account, but great power comes with great responsibility. The verification process needs to be ethical and genuine.

How to Get Verified on Instagram Step-By-Step

The application process for Instagram verification is really easy. You just need to follow these steps:
1. Visit your profile and tap the Menu button in the top right corner
2. Tap the Settings icon (it looks like a little gear)
3. Tap the Account icon
4. Tap Request Verification near the bottom
5. Fill out your full name, professional name, and category
6. Upload a picture of your ID or business documents
7. Click Send when your application is complete!

Make sure to read the section where you attach your ID! You’ll need a government ID that clearly states your name and date of birth (like a driver’s license, passport or national ID), or business documents like tax filings or a utility bill if you’re requesting verification for a business or brand.

And that’s it!

Instagram will let you know once they’ve reviewed your request. My official reply came three days after I applied.

Since I’m “Authentic,” “Unique,” and have a “Complete” profile, the issue seems to be that I’m not “Notable” enough. Oh well. It was worth a try!

In fact, the “Notable” requirement is where most accounts usually don’t pass muster – yet! Don’t worry, we have some tips to help!

Instagram verification requirements

Here are the requirements from Instagram to get your account verified:

Adhere to Instagram’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines

Be authentic

– To qualify, you have to be who you say you are, whether your account represents a person, a business or a brand!

Be unique –

Only one account per person or business can be verified (unless your account is language-specific). Fan accounts, meme accounts, and feature accounts aren’t verified.

Be complete

– Since the blue badge is reserved for public figures and entities, you can’t have a private profile. Your profile must also be complete, meaning you have a bio, profile photo and at least one post in your feed.

Be notable

– To grab the Instagram blue check for yourself, your account has to represent a well-known, highly searched for brand, person or business.

So, now to the million-dollar questions…

FAQs on Instagram Verification

Here’s an FAQ of the questions we get asked a lot about getting Instagram verified!

Do I have a business account to get Instagram verified?

The application is available to all Instagram account types. This includes Personal accounts, Creator accounts, and Business accounts.

Is the verification application free?

The application for Instagram verification is free! You can find it under your Settings in your Instagram app, so there’s no need to use a third-party app or program to apply.

If you’re asked to pay for Instagram verification, it’s a scam! ‍

How many followers do I need to get verified on Instagram?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Sadly, Instagram has never announced an official number of followers required for Instagram verification, and there is no data for the lowest followers verified Instagram account.

However, those with the most followers and greatest reach do have the most to lose, so there likely is some (unspecified) threshold of followers or reach required to be accepted.

That said, there is no harm in applying – and a lot you could gain if you’re approved. The application is quick and easy, so what do you have to lose?

The rest of us should just keep on building our followers and reach until we qualify as well!

Can Tailwind help me get verified?

No, we wish we could help, but can’t get you verified. Even though Tailwind is a trusted Instagram Partner ‍, that just means Instagram recognizes our app as being effective and helpful for growing business on Instagram. Only Instagram can verify your account.

However, we can help you grow your followers using our platform of Instagram tools. Tailwind AI Ghostwriter can write captions and short video scripts — try it for Reels!. Tailwind Createcan help you build dozens of posts in seconds. All of these offer a free trial, and you can have access to all the features together with Tailwind Pro.

What are the benefits of getting verified on Instagram?

Is Instagram verification worth applying for? Does the coveted blue badge really mean anything besides bragging rights?

Absolutely. Getting verified on Instagram has a positive effect on your marketing efforts on Instagram. Here’s are some of the perks of having a blue check:

Getting verified on Instagram builds trust – The blue check reassures your followers that you’re real and your account can be trusted.

You have access to Instagram Link in Stories – Verified accounts were the first to be able to add links to their Instagram Stories. Without verification, you’ll need at least 10,000 followers to access the feature.

It builds brand awareness – As we mentioned before, the blue check tells the world that you’re somebody. With a blue check, people are going to be buzzing to know who you are and what you’re about!

Increased attention from the blue badge – With all the buzz and curiosity about your new blue checkmark, you’ll be able to turn that attention into engagement, conversions and maybe even sales!

But wait, don’t lose hope of ever driving traffic from Instagram if you’re aren’t to 10K yet and can’t get verified.

An advanced link in bio tool like Smart.bio by Tailwind can help you drive traffic to your blog posts and products easily with a FREE customizable landing page!

How Long Does it Take to Get Verified on Instagram?

Like we shared above, the actual process for Instagram to verify you is fairly short, about 2-3 weeks. However, if you need to grow your follower base and improve your notability, that can take a lot longer.

Alright, we’ve got the frequently asked questions out of the way… let’s talk about some actionable tips to help you get verified!

How to Become More “Notable” On Instagram

1. Complete Your Instagram Bio

One of the core requirements of Instagram verification is a complete Instagram profile. Make sure your bio is completely filled out, includes a profile photo and you have at least one post on our account.

For a step-by-step peek at how to make a perfect bio, read “6 Steps to Create a Perfectly Branded Bio.” If you are running out of ideas for your Bio, check this article with 220+ Instagram Bio ideas.

2.Work On Getting Published

The main disqualifier for people hoping to get their Instagram accounts verified is not being newsworthy. Each Instagram account is verified manually by an Instagram employee, who performs a check for multiple news sources.

Your account must represent a well-known, highly searched for person, brand or entity. We review accounts that are featured in multiple news sources, and we don’t consider paid or promotional content as sources for review.

Instagram

You’re about to learn how to create content that absolutely explodes on TikTok. Sort of. Follow along with the real-life saga of Tiktok viral success as told by Alex McKenzie (aka @piesupplies), lowly software engineer by day, TikTok superstar by um, other times.

“It all started on a Sunday evening in July. I’m sitting back with a cool vintage Tab cola, enjoying the soothing hum of the 3D printer, and then at about midnight, the phone started blowing up.

I went from 70 followers to 3,500 overnight, and the video I had just shared already had 800K views, 106 shares, and over 700 comments.”

Alex McKenzie

Want those kinds of numbers for yourself? Stay tuned as Alex holds absolutely NOTHING back (no matter how much you might beg him to) in sharing his secrets to going viral on Tiktok.

Meanwhile, check out the video in question which is, at this writing, up to over 1 million views. If the reasons for its virality are clear to you, great. Otherwise, read on…

How to Go Viral on TikTok

The tldr:

“Nothing gets engagement on the internet quite like tee-ing strangers up to tell you that you’re wrong.”

– Cameron Mara, Tailwind Software Engineer

So, that would be number one:

#1 Secret to Going Viral on TikTok: Do Something Controversial

Not necessarily shocking (though that helps) or seriously divisive (we have enough of that, thank you), instead try something that people can get worked up about with very low stakes.

In this case, Alex was 3D printing a dice tower (yes, I had to look it up, too) and wanted to fill it (no, they’re not printed solid) with something OTHER than the expected sand. Still with me?

In his words, “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.” Can’t argue with that, right?

WRONG.

We’ll get to that in a minute.

So, off he goes to the Dollar Store to pick up nails and glue to weight his tower just the way he wants it.

Much outrage ensued.

Not understanding the lack of sand available in MANHATTAN, others had this to contribute:

Good thing he was about to become a superstar. This sand habit could break a man.

#2 Do Something Kind of Interesting

According to Alex, “3D printing is kind of a big thing.” I mean, who am I to argue?

It’s entirely possible all the ACTUALLY interesting things have been done to death on TikTok. Set the bar at “kind of” and watch your numbers soar!

There might actually be something to this. While fancy dance moves and talking dogs are show stoppers on the platform, there’s an insatiable appetite for a bit of invited voyeurism on social media.

#3 Find Your Niche and Roll with It

Alex is no mere one-hit TikTok wonder. No, he saw what the world needed – more 3D printing done WRONG – and decided to give them what they wanted.

Not that he did any research, mind you. I asked him if he thought this took off because of latent demand for inept and enraging 3D printing.

“Yeah, I did. Even though ultimately the response I got was hate and I had no research to back up my assumption.” Perfect.

He says,”People assumed I put the wrong thing in the dice tower, so I thought I would show them the “wrongest” thing you could put in a 3D print. And that would be food. Thus the series was born.

I recorded it as a cooking show and topped it off with nails. I figured that would get some sort of response.”

He figured right. His next project, a 3D octopus named Carol, was dubbed a “filthtopus” because of the disgusting infill (“infilth”) he used.

BONUS: The exact recipe Alex used to make the filthtopus

I asked him about the recipe for this InfilthTM. As all good recipe bloggers know, the answer must begin at the beginning of the beginning, or earlier if possible:

“I 3D print today because my father did, his father did, and his father’s father did. So, it’s been in the family for a while. We’re not entirely sure where it started, but we think it was from the Scottish side of the family because of the green Jello. Nails were added during the Great Depression.

It’s a family tradition I cherish because it really ties me back to my roots.”

Hold on a sec while I wipe away a tear.

When asked how his father feels about his TikTok fame, Alex muses,

“My father is a simple man who lives off the land. I told him I got a lot of views on TikTok and he asked where the theater was.”

-Alex McKenzie

Ohhhkayy….

So without further ado,

Here’s what you’ll need to make InfilthTM :

¼ c sugar (no artificial sweeteners, please)

Obligatory kitchen photo

Pinch of nutmeg

Pinch of chili powder

1 Tbsp parsley (it really rounds out the taste)

Salt to taste (but do not taste this)

2 dollops Mayonnaise (the good stuff)

Mustard for color

Salt to taste

2 Tbsp Creamy peanut butter for layer adhesion

3 swirls of honey

Sunflower seeds for texture

White cheese with a low melting point (we recommend mozzarella)

Cooked rice

Salt to taste.

Packet of green Jello

Trader Joe’s Chili onion crunch (optional)

Mustard

Snacks

Zucchini chicken baby food

Nails

Mix until smooth, adding salt to taste. It’s difficult with the nails in it. Be patient.

Do not be alarmed when the cheese disappears. It’s still there and will add a delectable ripeness to your completed filthtopus (or 3D project of your choice).

Pour into a plastic bag or piping bag and dispense into the chambers (is that what they’re called?) of your print.

#4 Have Thick Skin

“Some people noticed that I am wearing nail polish,” says Alex. “I do all my nails grey except my ring finger, the power finger – that’s a dark blue.” To recreate the look, he suggests OPI Mi Casa Es Blue Casa and Less is Norse.

People had questions.

I had to know. “Is it true that you are wearing nail polish because your nails are dirty?”

“It is. I get dirt under my nails, mostly sand. It’s just easier to paint them and hide my shame – and then crack open a bottle of fresh InfilthTM for filling my prints.”

People also had opinions.

“It hurts to have your choices called out in public like that, but that’s the price of fame, I guess.”

Seriously though, people can be mean, and amassing a large number of views and comments is a sure-fire way to bring out the trolls. Though you might consider sticking to more nerdy topics, as the comments on Alex’s post were pretty tame and the vast majority were downright positive.

#5 Don’t Panic

Tell me you can’t relate. You post a charming video of the creation of an iridescent filthtopus set to a stirring rendition of “Whistle While You Work,” and next thing you know – BLAMMO! You’re suspended.

Your fortune is gone. Your fans are in mourning. Your filthtopus has to pick up another side hustle.

Why was he suspended? Was it the fact that Alex made up the words to the background song when he couldn’t remember them? The fact that he used actual SAND in the printing? His nightingale voice?

We’ll never know for sure. All we care about is that he’s back – with no explanation. The weird 3D printing will continue.

Will he make any changes to his methods after this scare?

“I think the confusion is part of the intrigue maybe? My next TikTok videos are actually going to be coherent, so hopefully that doesn’t tank my engagement.”

Seems like a bold move.

#6 Use the Right Hashtags

Alex spent a grueling 30 seconds thinking about which hashtags might help his content reach the largest audience of the right people.

He landed on #craftingeek, #dnd, #diy, #3dprinting, #satisfyingvideo, #3dprinter.

When in doubt, you can use high-performing hashtags like:

#fyp

#foryoupage

#foryou

#viral

#followme

#original sound (especially if you’re going to sing)

BONUS: Monetize Your TikTok Account

I asked Alex what was next for him and his patented InfilthTM formula.

“Mass production. People love it (and when I say they love it, I mean they love to hate it).

People want it. I’m working with a bottling company to get it on the shelves. You can make it at home but that would be copyright infringement. Look for it in your local Kroeger.

We are buying sriracha and emptying the bottles to fill, so they’ll be easy to recognize.

You don’t need a lot to make your own filthtopus. Just get a couple dozen and maybe a dozen more to keep in the garage. The cheese will only reach maximum potency after a couple of 80-degree days anyway.

Oh, and because the original is very high in sodium, we will also offer an unsalted version.”

Find Sponsors

Could Alex be the next Ocean Spray guy? “I’m in talks with big mayo, Heinz, various 3D printer manufacturers. None of them want to sponsor me.” He’s currently waiting by the rotary phone for a call back from the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association.

Get Yourself Into the TikTok Creator Fund

TikTok has promised something like $230m over the course of the next three years to support the creators that make great content on the platform.

So, it’s no surprise that Alex got picked up right away.

“It took a couple of days for approval and. You have to have 10K followers, at least 100K views, and be over 18. You also have to verify your identity and send in a W-9 (in the US anyway). After a couple of days, I was IN!”

I asked Alex how many millions he had personally collected so far. When he sent a screenshot, I was shocked. It’s inspiring.

“I know,” says Alex – “Look at all those zeroes.”

As of this writing, he’s up to $22. He’s in the market for a TikTok house if you know of any (Googles ‘TikTok house”).

Automate Your Marketing with Tailwind

IF you needed to market InfilthTM which, now that you’ve gone viral, you really you don’t, would you use Tailwind?

“I’ll be spending a lot of time making product. I don’t have a lot of time to make content. It’s going to be hard to keep up. I think Tailwind will be really critical for getting InfilthTM to the world.

What more could we ask for, really?

Conclusion: How to Go Viral on TikTok

The six steps to going viral on TikTok are:

Do something controversial

Do something kind of interesting

Find your niche and, when you do, roll with it

Have thick skin (technically this doesn’t help you GO viral, but it helps you carry on when your life’s choices are questioned publicly)

Don’t panic when things go wrong, just keep going

Use the right hashtags

And did you catch the two bonus points? Get Alex’s patented InfilthTM recipe and learn how to monetize your newfound TikTok virality!

Hopefully it’s clear that there really is no actual secret to going viral on TikTok or any other platform. BUT, if you stay true to yourself, have a little fun, and keep at it, you might just be the next Alex McKenzie.

We know it’s hard to create new content for Pinterest, and while regularly creating new blog posts, products, and pages with great images may be the best way to grow your business on Pinterest (and elsewhere!), your time is valuable – and in short supply!

And every minute spent promoting your content is a minute you’re not developing your next new product or blog post, serving your customers, or enjoying some downtime at home.

Here are some ideas on how you can spend your time wisely to get the most out of each new piece of content without going overboard. Jeff Sieh and I discussed this live on Facebook recently.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz6gcJIBSkEu0026t=1s

Step 1: Think of a few ways your content could appeal to different audiences.

This will help your content appear in more search results.

Making sure your content is relevant to more audiences is a win-win. To get started, identify a few specific audiences for your content. How might you do that?

Let’s say you wrote a recipe blog post for a Garden Cherry Bourbon Smash cocktail (yum). A few audiences who might be interested in your recipe are:

Bourbon drinkers

Holiday party hosts

Couples planning a wedding

For each of the groups above, think about what might appeal to them. What might they search for that would be relevant to your content? Here are some examples of how to appeal to each audience:

Bourbon drinkers: Your Next Favorite Bourbon Cocktail

Holiday party hosts: A Holiday Cocktail to Wow Your Friends at Your Next Party

Couples planning a wedding: THE Signature Wedding Cocktail of 2020

Hint: If the content itself doesn’t include a mention of any of these specific concepts, add it in! This will make for a more satisfying experience as Pinterest users click through to your site, and Google loves updated content, too.

When attempting to identify potential additional audiences or contexts, here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

How can you engage a brand new audience you might not be reaching today?

Hint: use different keywords to appear in more unique searches

How can you get your content into new searches and in front of new people on Pinterest by relating it to a variety of common everyday interests?

What current trends could you incorporate?

Hint: Check out trends.pinterest.com for ideas!

What are some upcoming seasonal moments or important life events for which your content may be especially relevant?

Hint: Pinners plan EARLY (e.g. holiday trends start picking up as early as April!). Grab our planner and get ahead of these trends.

Grab our list of seasonal events, everyday interests, and life events which are applicable to Pinterest!

Step 2: Create different Pin designs for each audience to test for what works.

There’s no perfect Pin that appeals to everyone. Design a few specific Pins for each of your target audiences or contexts, and see what works best for each one. This is now incredibly easy with Tailwind Create.

When testing, you’ll be looking at which styles, types of images, or titles work best for an audience. It’s very important to do this in moderation and to ensure each Pin Design is distinctly unique.

Publishing many similar Pins for the same piece of content (with only slight differences or tweaks) creates a poor experience for Pinterest users who end up seeing the same idea over and over again. It’s also not likely to help you actually learn what works for a given audience.

You may be investing more time for only marginally-better results. Eventually, Pinners may begin to ignore your content, unfollow your boards, or even block your account.

Be specific. Try to present each Pin in its own unique way with:

New photo(s),

Different text on the image,

Unique titles

Fresh supporting descriptions

Sharing to different Boards, if applicable

Images look very similar. Same photo, same text on image.

Images are unique and feature different photos and text on image.

Only have one or two photos of your product right now? Take more if you can, and remember to plan for plenty of white space to allow you to include concise and motivating text on the image.

Step 3: Timely Publishing

Pin each design to the most relevant Board first. When sharing one Pin design to multiple relevant Boards, make sure to space them out using a generous interval (try at least 7-10 days) to avoid creating a poor, repetitive experience for Pinners.

Because you are targeting more than one audience and using different keywords, you can share the first designs for your bourbon drinkers, holiday party hosts, and couples planning a wedding on the same day if you’d like. If you created additional Pin designs for testing with those audiences, give each design a chance to pick up steam for a week or more before sharing your next design.

If those intervals are longer than you’re used to, you may want to consider moving your content calendar up by a few weeks to make sure your designs get out in time for plan-ahead Pinterest users!

Step 4: Measure the results

Measure your engagement, impressions, and traffic using Tailwind’s Top Pins Report, Pin Inspector, and Tribes. You can also use Pinterest’s analytics and Google analytics to see which Pins are driving traffic to your site. If you see an idea or design style that works well for a particular audience, create more content and Pins in a similar mold to reach them again with new content in the future.

Tailwind’s Top Pins Report is a Quick and Easy Way to See Which Pins are Bringing in the Most Traffic to Your Site.

Try it out today with a free trial of Tailwind for Pinterest.

Step 5: Keep Getting More From Your Content

Thinking of ways to give your existing content new life on Pinterest? First, ask yourself:

Is this idea or piece of content still relevant to your business? Should the content itself be updated to make it more relevant for today?

Would new audiences respond better to a brand new blog post or product listing? Maybe it’s time to create new content for your site or blog.

If you decide to create new ideas for this content, which new audiences might engage with this content if you presented it in a way that addresses exactly what they’re looking for? Repeat the process in steps 1 and 2 above.

Creating new ideas for existing content helps your content be found in new searches and is less likely to appear repetitive to Pinterest users.

But, sometimes your great ideas may fall flat or lose steam over time. You may want to create new Pin designs for your content:

If the content doesn’t get distribution from the first attempt – if you still feel the idea is relevant, perhaps you need to try a very different design; or the text on image, title, and description didn’t quite attract who you were aiming for. Try again and see if a whole new approach might work. If that flat lay fell flat, try a lifestyle image instead!

When there is a new seasonal approach you can add to the design of the Pin – cozy fall colors, themes, and motifs just don’t appeal to Pinterest users in the spring! Make your idea fit into TODAY.

When it might be newly relevant or fit into a current search trend. That “homework tips” blog post could be really useful for parents struggling to support their kids with remote learning right now. This is a great opportunity for also pulling in new keywords such as “remote learning”!

Test a couple of new Pin designs (don’t overdo it!)

An Easy Formula for Reaching New Audiences and Appearing New Searches on Pinterest

Pinterest’s user base has grown to over 475 million monthly active users. Gen Z and Millennial Pinners are joining in record numbers, effectively changing the makeup of the audience. And Pinners have spoken! They want to engage with video and explore content right on Pinterest.

So, today, Pinterest introduces Idea Pins – their multi-page format (formerly called Story Pins)! Now anyone with a business account* can create inspiring content and interact with their audiences, building more engaged communities right on Pinterest.

Idea Pins and new tools for their creation make it easy to publish professional-looking, saveable, engaging content directly on Pinterest.

Welcome news to anyone who may have spent more time than they’d like to admit in creating these super-engaging Pins! Been there.

The new tools make it so much easier.

“We believe the best inspiration comes from people who are fueled by their passions and want to bring positivity and creativity into the world. On Pinterest, anyone can inspire. From creators to hobbyists to publishers, Pinterest is a place where anyone can publish great ideas and discover inspiring content.

We have creators with extraordinary ideas on Pinterest, and with Idea Pins, creators are empowered to share their passions and inspire their audiences. By helping people on Pinterest spark creativity, try new things, build confidence, and be themselves, we believe creators are truly helping with our mission of bringing inspiration to create a life you love.”

The Origin “Story” Behind Idea Pins

Behind every good idea, there is a story – only, in this case, it’s Story Pins! In September 2020, Pinterest launched Story Pins with a small group of creators.

Creators and Pinners alike helped evolve the format to include new features and functionality to make it what it is today.

Why “Idea” Pins?

Your Ideas and inspiration make Pinterest special. Now, because Idea Pins are shared in more places on Pinterest, creators can easily build an audience right on Pinterest.

Starting today, Pinners in several markets will see Idea Pins from creators they follow at the top of their home feeds.

Idea Pins also appear in search, the Today Tab.

Idea Pins include everything a Pinner might need to act on your idea right on Pinterest – whether that’s trying a new recipe, craft, hairstyle, workout, or, well, anything else!

Idea Pin Performance

Because Idea Pins are so engaging and actionable, Pinners are indeed engaging! Pinterest found that in the past month, Idea Pins averaged 9x the comment rate of standard Pins**.

Here at Tailwind, we found that Idea Pins averaged 41x the saves of a standard Pin***. Clearly, they are a hit!

And why not? There’s nothing quite as inspiring as watching a great idea take shape right in front of you.

Because Pinterest is crucial to the business success of many creators, and because typically that has resulted from Pinterest sending traffic to a creator’s website or blog, Pinterest is testing adding monetization options to Idea Pins.

Pinterest introduced their first-ever Creator Fund last month and have begun testing creator and brand collaborations with a few creators including Domonique Panton, Peter Som, and GrossyPelosi.

They’re also testing product tagging within Idea Pins so creators can make their content shoppable. Meaningful and scalable monetization is the goal, and we’ll learn more about the details in the upcoming months.

As you well know, Pinterest is constantly improving and updating their analytics data. What can we learn from them and how will they inform our Pinterest strategy?

Let’s have a look, shall we? We’ll start off with some of the basics and then move into using analytics to inform our strategy.

Pinterest Analytics Glossary

Pinterest Impressions:

What are impressions on Pinterest you ask? Pinterest impressions refer to the amount of times your Pins were seen on any given screen. Impressions are a good indicator of how often your pin topics are being searched, and if your Pins are anywhere within scrolling distance.

Engagements:

Engagements numbers tell you how many times your Pin was clicked or saved. This can also help you see how often your topics are searched and whether or not your pin drew enough interest for a click or a save.

Tailwind Tip: Use engagement data with your total audience data to get understand your content’s engagement rate.

Saves:

Saves indicate how often a user saved your Pin to one of their boards. This is likely a higher intent metric, as it’s something the user wants to remember (and possibly buy). It will also come up again and again for them when they go to those boards!

Total Audience:

This metric is easily confused with impressions, but it measures how many unique views your Pin had. That means that it is measuring exactly how many people saw your Pin (not necessarily how many times they saw it).

While impressions can have one user multiple times, total audience tracks the user only once.

Outbound Clicks:

This one is self-explanatory, and an excellent indicator of audience intent. Outbound clicks refers to the amount of visits to the linked URL in your Pins (from the Pins themselves of course).

This is a very important metric in determining how successful your Pins are in your overall sales strategy.

There is lots more insight to gain from Pinterest analytics, but hopefully these basic definitions can help you as you review your performance metrics.

The New Pinterest Analytics: How It Works

The first thing you’ll notice is the design – clean and simple. It’s a huge improvement over the old dashboard.

By default you’ll see Impressions from all content types during the last 30 days:

Pins you saved from your site (“From you” – this includes repins on that Pin)

Pins other people saved from your site (“Not from you” – this includes repins on that Pin)

Paid and organic

Activity from all devices and from all your claimed accounts PLUS activity on Pins you saved which go to other people’s sites.

Whew!

Now comes the fun part – filtering the data! You can change your date range to show up to 90 days of information.

The first drop-down menu allows you a quick look at trends in:

Impressions

Engagements

Closeups

Link Clicks

Saves

Engagement Rate

Closeup Rate

Link Click Rate

Save Rate

Customize your chart view by using “Split by” to visualize trends broken out by:

Content type (Organic or Paid and earned – earned being downstream activity resulting from ads)

Claimed accounts (your website, Instagram, other people’s sites, etc.)

Device

Source (From you or Not from You)

Here are some of the important marketing questions you can answer with the new Pinterest analytics.

Pinterest Analytics FAQ

1. Which of My Pins Generate the Most Pinterest Traffic?

We’ll hop down to “Top Pins” below the graph at the top and change the drop-down menu to “Link clicks.”

Then, set your filters to:

“Content Type – Organic” (so your ad data doesn’t skew the results)

Claimed Accounts – Your URL

Voila! You’ll see the Pins which are sending the most traffic to your site.

Are they mostly Pins you saved or are they “Not from you” (change the “Split by” dropdown to filter)?

Why does this matter? Understanding what types of content, which image styles, and what subject matter sends the most traffic to your site is crucial in planning your content strategy and informing the design of your Pins.

Just switch the Top Pins drop down to “engagements.”

You can change the filters on the left to limit results to your own URL and to Pins you saved (“From you”) as well.

Why does this matter? When Pinterest shows your content to your followers first, they’re looking for a reaction. More engagement from your followers = more distribution for your Pin!

Taking a look at what Pinners find engaging can help you determine which topics and even which Pin designs/text on Pin work best for your audience.

Tailwind Tip: Looking at engagement for Pins NOT from your website gives you a look at what is working for your competitors, which might work for you, too! To view those Pins, just change your “Claimed sites” option to “Other Pins.”

It can also help you get more followers on Pinterest and those claimed accounts. But, is anyone really seeing that content? Does it make sense to cross post from Instagram to Pinterest?
